Look Up, Handsome by Jack Strange

A beautiful love story, set in gorgeous bookish Hay-on-Wye during the literary festival. Boy meets boy, will they/won’t they, with wonderful moments - tears of joy one minute, sadness the next.

This isn't just a book; it’s a whole mood.

While it’s definitely a slow-burn, it’s the best kind…. the kind that builds momentum with every chapter until you’re completely obsessed and just can’t stop reading.

The plot features multiple threads that are woven together so seamlessly you don't even realise how hooked you are until you're halfway through.

But the characters are the real stars here. They feel so lived-in and authentic that by the end, they felt like people I’ve known for years. And the writing? It’s a total emotional rollercoaster. I found myself laughing out loud in public one minute, only to be hit with involuntary tears the next…. and this was on a busy train!!!

It’s rare to find an author who can balance genuine wit with that kind of raw, emotional gut-punch.

Also, can we talk about the setting? The descriptions of Hay-on-Wye were so immersive and atmospheric that I’ve already started looking up hotels. I feel like I’ve already walked those streets, and explored that castle. Now I want to be there for the book festival, to soak it all up in person.

By the time I reached the final act, I actually had to force myself to stop speed-reading. I was enjoying the world so much that I started rationing the chapters, just to keep it from ending.

It’s such a refreshing, heart-centred, and deeply satisfying read. If you’re looking for a story with a pulse, this is it.

I will definitely be reading other titles by Jack Strange.

If you love romantic gay fiction, this is the best kind.
