The Story of the Story -

How The Titan and the Trainer was formed

The story of ‘The Titan and the Trainer’ began way back in August 2018.

I know this date precisely because of this picture in my camera roll.

At the time, my partner and I were living in New Cross Gate, in Zone 2 of London. Our friends Isago and Jesús came for lunch and we planned to make sushi and Katsu curry. I had just bought a new iPad with an Apple Pencil, so whilst we were prepping lunch, Isago (who happens to be a very talented digital artist), asked if he could have a play and a scribble on my iPad to try the Apple Pencil.

He sketched the image here, just playing with the various brushes and spray tools in ProCreate.

I took one look at that image and instantly loved it. My brain raced immediately, thinking, wow, he looks like some rich CEO of a large company. Probably someone with a lot of power, completely in control. Wouldn’t it be interesting if somebody like that got completely disrupted by his nemesis, the opposite to him? That was the moment the idea of ‘The Titan and the Trainer’ was born.

I grabbed my iPhone and made 6 simple idea notes.

Some of the details changed - the title came later as I developed the story. Callum and Julian’s surnames changed, but the simple premise of the story remained throughout.

I don’t know how, but somehow I always saw the story and it stayed with me through the 8 years it took to write.

I continued to develop the story. I thought about their character arcs and the threats and challenges they could face. I captured all my ideas on my phone, on Post-its, and eventually in a bright pink notebook which became ‘The Bible’ of the book.

So I had the idea on 26th August, 2018 and I finished writing the story on 19th February 2026.
